We know what a lovely Victorian town Cape May, is, but there is another town in the east central coastal area of New Jersey that is also Victorian in character, lovely to look at, and home to a boardwalk designed to be enjoyed. We’re speaking of Spring Lake, New Jersey, founded in 1892.
Spring Lake and its immediate surroundings are known as the “Irish Riviera” because of the large Irish-American population in the area. This picturesque seaside town has been a unique seashore resort for over 100 years, and the turn-of-the-century architecture of the lovely homes bordering its tree-lined streets provide a peaceful place for a quiet evening walk.
Named for numerous fountains of crystal clear water fed by underground springs, Spring Lake is the home of the longest non-commercial boardwalk in the state of New Jersey. It’s a tranquil and peaceful resort community with two miles of beautiful beaches, picture perfect bed and breakfast inns, over 60 fine shops and boutiques, a variety of gourmet restaurants, and an atmosphere so inviting that best-selling novelist Mary Higgins Clark was moved to purchase a vacation home in the community.
An evening’s entertainment might include a band concert at the gazebo, or an evening of theater at the Community House. Access to nearby water skiing, boating, fishing, horseback riding, golf, tennis, bicycling, and even thoroughbred racing make one’s time in Spring Lake all it could possibly be and more!
The speed limit in Spring Lake is just 25 m.p.h., and there is a very good reason for this: no one is in a hurry and there’s so much to look at and enjoy.
